Key Facts
Terminology
Benign proliferation of glands indigenously situated along verumontanum of prostatic urethra
Clinical Issues
Encountered as incidental histologic finding
Significant as morphologic mimic of adenocarcinoma in prostate biopsy specimens
Microscopic Pathology
Seen along ejaculatory or prostatic ducts (67%), utricle (19%), or adjacent urethral mucosa (14%)
Composed of relatively well-circumscribed proliferations of closely packed glands
Frequently contain corpora amylacea
Glandular cells usually are cuboidal to low columnar, and basal cell layer is readily discernible
TERMINOLOGY
Abbreviations
Verumontanum mucosal gland hyperplasia (VMGH)
Definitions
Benign proliferation of glands indigenously situated along verumontanum of prostatic urethra
Verumontanum or seminal colliculus is located at posterior prostatic urethral wall where utricle and ejaculatory ducts merge with prostatic urethra
ETIOLOGY/PATHOGENESIS
Origin
Morphologic evidence suggests origin from urethral mucosal glands, which occupy most distal portion of prostatic ducts, ejaculatory ducts, and utricle
Another possibility is origin from utricle since this structure developmentally acquires morphological and functional features of prostate
However, presence of VMGH exclusively along prostatic urethra argues against this theoryStay updated, free articles. Join our Telegram channel
