This scenario highlights both how complicated prescribing can be, but also how dangerous it is when done incorrectly. You MUST follow a routine when prescribing to ensure you do not fall foul of the common pitfalls encountered in clinical practice and the Prescribing Safety Assessment (PSA), e.g. the PReSCRIBER routine (see Chapter 2 for more details).


Note that in this section of the PSA you will, in fact, only be required to write one prescription (i.e. one prescription for one drug), and the scenarios below reflect this; however, the above scenario (Question 7.1) is much more representative of real life!


This chapter (and section in the PSA) uses the same theory learned in previous chapters but changes the format of questioning. However, note the wealth of marks to be gained from this section of the PSA (80/200 in total): this is a section to master!
