Chapter 46 Penile Biopsy
Equipment
A punch biopsy instrument, pick-ups, small iris scissors, and a specimen jar can be used to sample these lesions (Figure 46-1). Lidocaine of 1% without epinephrine, a syringe, and a 27-gauge needle will be necessary for anesthesia. The 5-O absorbable sutures, a needle driver, and suture scissors will be used to close the lesion.
Key steps
1. Prepare the lesion: If the patient is not allergic to iodine, clean the lesion with Betadine (Figure 46-2).
2. Topical anesthetic: Slowly inject 1 to 2 cc of lidocaine under the lesion, elevating it slightly (Figure 46-3). Test the skin to assess adequate anesthesia (Figure 46-4).
