Chapter 31 Paracervical Block
Common indications
Paracervical blocks can provide excellent anesthesia for procedures that involve cervical dilation, uterine aspiration, or instrumentation of the uterus. The paracervical block is not recommended for loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) procedures because it may not be as dense on the surface of the cervix as an intracervical block (Figure 31-1).
Equipment
The equipment needed for the block includes a local anesthetic such as 2% lidocaine, a 10-cc syringe, a needle extender, an 18-gauge needle, and a 1¼-inch, 27-gauge needle. Draw up 8 cc of lidocaine into the syringe using the 18-gauge needle. Remove the needle, and attach the 27-gauge needle to the needle extender (Figure 31-2).
