Chapter 41 Male Bladder Catheterization
Equipment
Bladder catheterization equipment can be obtained in sterile kits that contain the sterile catheter, antiseptic solution and cotton balls, lidocaine jelly, and urine collection containers (Figure 41-1).
Key steps
1. Position and prepare the patient: Open the kits, put on sterile gloves, and cover the patient with a fenestrated drape (Figure 41-2). Open the antiseptic solution, and pour it onto cotton balls. Thoroughly cleanse the urethral meatus with antiseptic solution (Figure 41-3).
2. Insert the catheter: Lubricate the catheter with 2% lidocaine jelly (Figure 41-4). Gently insert the tip of the catheter through the urethra. Pass the entire length of the catheter into the urethra up to the junction of the inflation port (Figure 41-5). Insert at least 20 cm of the catheter into the urethra to ensure that the tip is fully inside the bladder.
