Chapter 41 Male Bladder Catheterization

1. Position and prepare the patient: Open the kits, put on sterile gloves, and cover the patient with a fenestrated drape (Figure 41-2). Open the antiseptic solution, and pour it onto cotton balls. Thoroughly cleanse the urethral meatus with antiseptic solution (Figure 41-3).

2. Insert the catheter: Lubricate the catheter with 2% lidocaine jelly (Figure 41-4). Gently insert the tip of the catheter through the urethra. Pass the entire length of the catheter into the urethra up to the junction of the inflation port (Figure 41-5). Insert at least 20 cm of the catheter into the urethra to ensure that the tip is fully inside the bladder.
