Introduction

A broad spectrum of vascular proliferations may involve lymph nodes, ranging from the benign vascular hyperplasias of some lymphadenopathies to the malignant vascular neoplasias of Kaposi sarcoma and angiosarcoma. Non-neoplastic angiomatosis in lymph nodes arising in the high endothelial venules of the paracortex is a characteristic feature of Castleman lymphadenopathy (see Chapter 42), Kimura lymphadenopathy (see Chapter 35), the subacute and chronic stages of HIV lymphadenitis (see Chapter 15), and others. A peculiar process of lymph node angiomatosis is the vascular transformation of sinuses, in which the vasoproliferative process selectively involves the nodal sinuses (see Chapter 48). Benign vascular tumors of lymph nodes are rare and include typical hemangioma, angiomyomatous hamartoma and hemangioendothelioma. Malignant vascular neoplasms of lymph nodes include the sporadic, epidemic, and endemic forms of Kaposi sarcoma (by far the most common since the appearance of AIDS) and angiosarcoma, usually not as a primary tumor of lymph nodes but as part of disseminated neoplasia.
