Chapter 27 Intrauterine Device (IUD) Removal
Equipment
A ring forceps is used for a simple removal of the IUD with visible strings. The equipment needed for removing an IUD without visible strings includes a Cytobrush, local anesthetic, a 10-cc syringe, an 18- and 27-gauge needle with a needle extender, a uterine sound, a tenaculum, and an IUD hook (Figure 27-1).

1. Removal of IUD with visible strings: To remove an IUD with visible strings, first visualize the cervix with a speculum examination. Use a ring forceps to grasp the IUD strings, lock the forceps, then pull gently to remove the IUD from the uterus (Figure 27-2).
