Chapter 42 Female Bladder Catheterization



Common indications


Urinary bladder catheterization is an important procedure used to diagnose problems of the urinary tract and to manage fluid balance.



Equipment


Bladder catheterization equipment can be obtained in sterile kits that contain the sterile catheter, antiseptic solution and cotton balls, lidocaine jelly, and urine collection containers (Figure 42-1).

Key steps



1. Prepare patient and kit: Place the patient comfortably in the lithotomy position. Open the kit, put on sterile gloves, and cover the patient with a fenestrated drape. The kit can be set up between the patient’s legs or on a side table.

2. Cleanse the urethra: Open the antiseptic solution, and pour it onto cotton balls. Gently separate the labia with your nondominant hand, and thoroughly cleanse the labia and urethral meatus. Usually three or four antiseptic-soaked cotton balls will be necessary.
