Drugs for the Treatment of Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism |
I. Hypothyroidism. In primary hypothyroidism, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations can be used to monitor this treatment (free T4 is an insensitive indicator and may be within the normal range when TSH is inhibited). Measurement of free T4 is warranted in secondary hypothyroidism when TSH release is impaired.
A. Synthetic Thyroxine (T4: Levothyroxine). Synthetic thyroxine (T4) is the treatment of choice for primary hypothyroidism. In the peripheral tissues, T4 is deiodinated to form T3 (the active form of thyroid hormone).
