The bipolar fetal scalp electrode has a short spiral wire that can be twisted into the fetal scalp and then connected to a monitoring device (Figure 13-1).

2. Examine cervix: To place a scalp electrode, the amniotic sac needs to be ruptured and the cervix sufficiently dilated to allow placement. With sterile gloves, gently place two lubricated fingers through the vagina and examine the fetal scalp. Confirm that the presenting part is the vertex (Figure 13-3).
