Chamaemelum nobile (L.) All.
Anthemis nobilis L.; Chamomilla nobilis (L.) Godr.; and others
Dried flowerheads
Indications/uses: Despite the chemical differences, this species is used in a way similar to the more widely used Matricaria recutita (German chamomile, see page 94). Internally, Roman chamomile is used to treat digestive ailments, including bloating and flatulence; and as a sedative for restlessness and mild insomnia due to nervous disorders. Under the THR scheme it is registered only ‘for the relief of flatulence, bloating and mild upset stomach’. Externally, chamomile extracts are used to treat skin inflammation and irritation, infections of the mouth and gums, and are widely used in cosmetics, especially hair care products. The essential oil is popular in aromatherapy.
Evidence: Although chamomile is very popular and there is much anecdotal evidence, there is little clinical evidence available for either internal or external use.
Safety: Generally regarded as safe, although there may be some quality issues with the herb and some products, due to contamination or misidentification of species.
