Protein incorporation into mitochondria
Nearly all mitochondrial proteins are synthesized in the cytoplasm and taken up into the mitochondrion post-translationally. Proteins are targeted to mitochondria by short targeting signals, which may be located at the N-terminal or internally within the polypeptide chain. Receptors in the outer mitochondrial membrane recognize the signal and direct the proteins to the import machinery (Fig. 3.14.1
