Adhesion molecules
The development and function of tissues is dependent on the physical interaction of one cell with another. These physical interactions are mediated by members of several families of membrane-spanning proteins, called adhesion molecules (Fig. 3.30.1). Adhesion molecules also play important roles in more transient interactions between cells, including those involved in cellular migration and the interactions between cells of the immune system.
