CHAPTER 183 Pediatric Suprapubic Bladder Aspiration
Suprapubic bladder aspiration is a method of obtaining a sterile urine specimen in a young infant when other methods are unsatisfactory. This procedure is most successful in an infant younger than 2 years of age because at that age the bladder is an abdominal organ. After 2 years, as the child grows, the bladder moves into the pelvis, increasing both the difficulty of the procedure and the risk of complications. (See Chapter 225, Emergency Department, Hospitalist, and Office Ultrasonography [Clinical Ultrasonography], for a method of confirming a full bladder and determining where to direct the needle.)
