Definitions


Metabolic bone diseases: disorders of bone which may be attributed to cellular changes or to dietary deficiencies, genetic defects or lack of exposure to sunlight. They are characteristed by bone loss or dysplasia. They include osteoporosis, rickets and osteomalacia, Paget’s disease of bone and hyperparathyroidism.


Osteoblasts: bone cells responsible for bone formation. Osteoclasts: bone cells responsible for bone resorption.

  • 98% of calcium is stored in bones with equal flux into and out of skeleton maintained by parathormone, vitamin D and calcitonin.
  • 30% of women in developed countries will sustain an osteoporotic fracture during their lifetime.
  • Acute osteomyelitis should be diagnosed early and treated aggressively with IV antibiotics.
