44 Mitosis
Mitosis or M phase is a continuous dynamic process in vivo but can be subdivided into five mitotic stages (nuclear division) followed by a sixth stage of cytokinesis (cytoplasmic division) (Fig. 3.44.1). Mitosis is necessarily a highly accurate process to ensure the correct segregation of sister chromosomes. The result of mitotic cell division is the production of two daughter cells that contain a complete copy of the genome of the parent cell.
