Malvae folium; Malvae flos
Whole or fragmented dried leaf (commonly); dried flower (occasionally)
Indications/uses: Mallow herbal teas and hydroalcoholic extracts are most commonly used for upper respiratory tract inflammation, due to their antibacterial and demulcent properties. They are formulated into cough mixtures and mouth-washes, and applied topically as emollients for a range of skin conditions.
Evidence: No controlled clinical studies are available. Pre-clinical data support the use as a demulcent.
Safety: There are no known safety concerns, and the plant is also used widely as a food ingredient, but there is a lack of data about herbal extracts of the plant.
