Examination of an abdominal aortic aneurysm

What are the differences between a normal palpable aorta and an aneurysmal aorta?

A normal aorta is pulsatile (displaces palpating hands vertically), whilst an aneurysmal aorta is expansile (displaces hands obliquely). In clinical practice this is not a definitive method of differentiation, and formal imaging should be arranged if there is clinical concern.

What is the relevance of an axillobifemoral or axillounifemoral bypass?

In the context of a midline laparotomy this may suggest that the aorta has been previously ligated or a previous aortic graft has been occluded or has failed.
