Scilla maritima L.; Urginea maritima (L.) Baker; U. scilla Steinh.; and others Asparagaceae (previously in Hyacinthaceae and Liliaceae) Maritime squill; red squill; sea onion; white squill Scillae bulbus Bulb Contains cardiac glycosides, mostly based on scillarenin, the main compounds being scillaren A and proscillaridin A, with a number of minor glycosides. The bufadienolide proscillaridin A was identified as a cytotoxic compound in this species (El-Seedi et al. 2013). There is considerable variation between sources of the plant. Red squill contains, in addition, scilliroside and scillirubroside and a red pigment. Flavonoids such as quercetin, taxifolin and vitexin as well as phytosterols are also present (Williamson et al. 2013).
