The CB1 cannabinoid receptor is responsible for modulating the function of all immune system cells in the body.27 The endocannabinoid system plays a key role in many autoimmune disorders, but using plant cannabinoids to treat these conditions is not well understood. Both naturally derived and synthetic cannabinoids demonstrate anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive activity that may be of interest in the treatment of autoimmune disorders including multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, asthma, and septic shock.28
