Botryomycosis











Pulmonary botryomycosis shows abscess formation image, and in the center of the abscess there is an eosinophilic clump of bacterial organisms image.






Higher magnification shows the presence of the characteristic grains image, a feature of botryomycosis.

Infectious Agents



  • Can be caused by different bacterial organisms



    • Staphylococcus aureus


    • Pseudomonas aeruginosa


    • Escherichia coli


    • Proteus vulgaris


Pathogenesis



  • Not well understood; possibilities include



    • Decreased T and B lymphocyte function


    • Unusual tissue response


    • Foreign body
