Leopard’s bane; mountain tobacco; wolf’s bane
Flowers
Indications/uses: Used topically to treat sprains, bruises, inflammation, fracture oedema and muscle pain; may support treatment of rheumatic diseases.
N.B.: Arnica is often taken orally as a homoeopathic preparation to treat or prevent bruising, including after surgery, but a clinical study for this use did not show efficacy.
Evidence: There is some clinical evidence and a long history of use to support arnica for reducing bruising, but not for other indications. Its use is plausible based on the main active compounds (the sesquiterpene lactones), which are known anti-inflammatory agents and are absorbed through the skin.
Safety: If taken internally arnica is poisonous, and potentially fatal.
N.B.: Homoeopathic arnica tablets are not toxic.
