Main chemical compounds:


The main constituents are arbutin (hydroquinone beta-glucoside) and related hydroquinone derivatives such as hydroquinone and methylarbutin. Other compounds present include polyphenols (gallotannins, ellagictannin, corilagin, catechin and anthocyanidin derivatives), phenolic acids (gallic acid, p-coumaric and syringic acids), flavonoids (hyperoside, quercitrin) and triterpenes (ursolic acid and uvaol) and piceoside, an iridoid glucoside (EMA 2010b; WHO 2004; Williamson et al. 2013).


Clinical evidence:


No clinical data on bearberry leaf extract alone are available. The prophylactic effect of a hydroalcoholic extract of bearberry leaves (standardised to arbutin and methylarbutin content) in combination with Taraxacum officinale
