Chapter 12 Amniotomy
Common indications
Amniotomy is the artificial rupture of membranes performed in the course of labor. The most common reasons to perform an amniotomy are to assess amniotic fluid and to allow the placement of internal monitoring devices (Figure 12-1).
Equipment
The amnio-hook is a plastic device that facilitates the artificial rupture of membranes (Figure 12-2).
Key steps
1. Assess the cervix: With sterile lubricated gloves, the cervix needs to be examined to assess the presenting part and cervical dilation (Figure 12-3). The cervix should be at least 2 cm dilated with the vertex well applied to the cervix.
