CASE 48
A 17-year-old high school hockey player was violently checked into the boards during a game. The force of the impact was borne by the player’s right acromion. The player was in severe pain from the impact and complained of restricted movement at the right shoulder. He was transported to the local medical center and the physical examination showed a prominent right clavicle and inferior displacement of the right acromion. The inferior displacement of the acromion was more pronounced when the patient held a 15-lb weight in his right hand. Subsequent imaging studies confirmed the diagnosis of separation of the right acromioclavicular (AC) joint (Fig. 6-16). The separation was surgically repaired.
