Introduction
In this section, common operations performed on the small and large intestine are described. First, small bowel resection and anastomosis are detailed in Chapter 74 in which the technique of double-layered, handsewn anastomosis is introduced; strictureplasty for Crohn’s disease is also described. Chapter 75 describes the equivalent laparoscopic procedure using a stapled technique. The general topography of the small intestine and the differences between the jejunum and ileum have already been illustrated in previous chapters. The appendix, a diverticulum of the gastrointestinal tract of uncertain significance, is described in Chapters 76 and 77 in which the common operations of traditional and laparoscopic appendectomy are presented. Because the operation for appendicitis sometimes discloses an unexpected Meckel’s diverticulum, the procedures for resection of this diverticulum are included in these chapters.
